Tuesday 8th October 2013 – 3 small walks ****Limeuil, Bonaguil and Lustrac – Sunny periods.
We moved from our spot by the lake before breakfast because the roadworks crew had arrived very early and were shifting gravel just along the car park from the van. We had our breakfast at Lalinde canal Bassin before visiting the Intermarche. Drove along the river road we cycled yesterday to Mauzac then followed the river along, stopping to look at the various viewing points around the meanders. We stopped at Limeuil which is where the rivers Vezere and Dordogne meet. It is a really pretty place and has an ancient village built up a hillside. We walked to the top hoping to take photos of the panorama view but they have made a posh garden on top of the castle ruins at the top of the village and charge you 7 euros each to go in! We hadn’t brought the wallet and wouldn’t have paid that anyway but we did follow the village walk leaflet and it was a great place. Back down to the van to have our picnic sitting on the rug on the bank right where the two rivers meet. We left there and drove along a little more before leaving the Dordogne at nearly the place where we have visited from the other direction. We travelled down towards the River Lot, stopping at the Chateau Bonaguil. Again built on a hillside so another steep walk. We didn’t go in but enjoyed the walk. Carried on to Fumel where we visited the tourist information for maps and went onto the chateau terrace which was again a lovely old building. After consulting the maps we drove down stream to a lovely place called Lustrac which is right on the banks of the Lot with really old quaint buildings and a lock for pleasure boats to get round the weir. Just after we parked a boat came through the lock which must be quite unusual as the season appears to be well and truly over. We drove along a track where fishermen drive and parked up in a beautiful spot on the river bank. After a cuppa and rest we walked up the path to see if we could find a bridge across the river which is shown on the cycling map as we fancy biking from here tomorrow. There are lots of cycle paths around here and we were pleased to find that the path does go across the river and shares the bridge with the railway line. A train went past just as we were leaving the bridge. Lots of walnut trees here so we added a few more to our growing collection!

Wednesday 9th October – Bike **** Lustrac to Villeneuve sur Lot via St Sylvestre sur Lot and Pont de Penne-Cloudy

What a view to wake up to, one of our best! There are lots of decent sized fish swimming just at the edge of the river, near the bank. The morning sort of disappeared really. We packed our lunch and set out on the bikes, taking some photos near the lock and riding out of the village and across the railway bridge we found last night. The cycle route (I wouldn’t say track as most of it was on roads, some quiet and some really busy!), took you through lots of orchards with apple trees groaning under the strain of all the fruit. We stopped at Port de Penne for a rest and watched river life while we decided whether to go up hill to a medieval village at Penne Agenais or carry on the cycle route to Villeneuve sur Lot. We decided not to attempt the very steep hill and carried on to Villeneuve. The whole route is very agricultural with more orchards of apples, plums and walnuts and fields of salad crops, tomatoes, aubergines etc. It was like a French version of Newbourne. We saw a lady on a tractor sowing seed and covering it with a layer of sand. We asked her what the seeds were when she stopped at the end of the row to refill – she said Manche and showed us the bag – the English said Corn salad so we are still unsure what it is but definitely some sort of salad crop. The roads got quite hectic as we got into Villeneuve but we managed it ok and eventually came to a viewing point of the river which looked down on the base nautique where teenagers were then setting out on canoes from our side of the river and rowing/skulling boats on the other. It is Wednesday which means that the kids don’t go to school in the afternoon, they do extra curricula/fun stuff We watched them for a while and sat and had our lunch at the picnic tables there. The boat we saw go through the lock last night and this morning was moored at the same place! After lunch we cycled through the old parts of the town and over the various bridges which were nice but the rest of the town isn’t really our thing – too big! We decided to take a slightly different route back – the cycle route called Urbane out of the town and then cut a bit off the way back into Port de Penne by taking an ordinary country road instead of the one they suggested. A rest at the Port and ate half each of a pastry we bought in town. Back to the van over 5 hours after we left – 50km cycling!!
